Maximize Your Microsoft Investments
Mattermost extends Microsoft Teams, Microsoft 365, and Entra ID for work that needs more control than everyday collaboration tools provide, including sensitive data, incident response outside your primary systems, and private, classified, or disconnected networks. Your people stay in Teams and Outlook, while sensitive work runs in a Mattermost deployment that you own and control.
The following capabilities are available:
Sovereign Collaboration
Organizations bound by data sovereignty or compliance rules often can't run sensitive collaboration in a shared cloud.
Benefits
- Deploy where your data must stay. Run Mattermost on-premises, in a private or sovereign cloud, on Azure, or in an air-gapped network. See deployment options.
- Stay in Teams and Outlook. Embed Mattermost in Microsoft 365, Teams, and Outlook with Mattermost Mission Collaboration for Microsoft (Beta). Users sign in automatically, and mentions and direct messages appear in the Teams Activity Feed.
- Keep control of your data. Messages and files stay in storage you control. Apply legal hold and data retention policies, and use granular system permissions and delegated administration to control who can do what.
Out-of-Band Incident Response
During an incident, Microsoft 365 may be unavailable, or the systems under attack may not be trustworthy.
Benefits
- Keep working when primary systems are down. Run a separate, out-of-band Mattermost instance for incident communication and coordination. See Deploy for Out-of-Band (OOB) Communications.
- Sign in without depending on Microsoft. If Microsoft 365 or Entra ID is unavailable, Entra ID sign-in won't work. Pre-provision responder accounts in Mattermost with a secondary identity provider that doesn't rely on your primary SSO, or with locally stored credentials and MFA, so responders can reach the out-of-band instance during an outage. The OOB deployment guide describes this setup.
- Follow a clear plan. Use Playbooks for repeatable triage, escalation, and resolution. Playbooks run on your own Mattermost instance, so they keep working when Microsoft services don't.
- Protect mobile notifications. Use ID-only push notifications so notifications carry no message content.
- Use Microsoft integrations when they're available. Entra ID sign-in (OpenID Connect, or SAML), Microsoft Teams Sync, Microsoft Teams Meetings, and Microsoft Calendar depend on Microsoft services, so plan on them being unavailable during a Microsoft outage. Teams Sync forwards Teams chat notifications to Mattermost and requires an Azure OAuth app and a paid Azure subscription for metered APIs.
External Collaboration with Full Control
Partners, contractors, and allies often aren't on your Microsoft tenant, which can push teams toward unmanaged tools.
Benefits
- Share channels with partners. Use connected workspaces to share channels between your Mattermost server and a partner's Mattermost server. Mattermost synchronizes shared content to the partner’s server. That partner controls its own storage and access.
- Govern each side separately. Each server controls its own channel permissions and access, and you can require custom Terms of Service.
AI Inside Your Boundary
Teams that can't send prompts or data to outside services still need AI to move faster.
Benefits
- Choose where models run. Connect agents to Azure OpenAI or to models you host yourself through an OpenAI-compatible endpoint.
- Work faster in channels and playbooks. Use Mattermost Agents to summarize threads, answer questions, and automate tasks.
